ADVICES TO CHOW CHOW OWNERS

1) VACCINATIONS
When 7-8 weeks old, the pup was vaccinated against: carré, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvovirosis. You have to execute the recall of these vaccines 1 month after firstly-vaccination. Then you will not be long in making administer the anti-rabic vaccine (renewed every year on precise date)
 
2) GENERAL ADVICES
It is important to have in his pharmacy permanently:
- Lactéol (in the event of diarrhoea) (sale in pharmacy), or of ultra-yeast.
- physiological salt solution to clean the eyes (Tiacil or other)
- a product to clean the ears (pharmacy or veterinary surgeon): Léoreilles or other
- aqueous éosine (to drain small wounds or eczema): Hydrocortider for example
 
3) VERMIFUGE 
You have to administer vermifuge to your puppy, every month up to 6 months, then 3 times per annum. For the vermifuge, take advice from your veterinary surgeon.
 
4) NOURISHMENT
For the pup, it will be of domestic type, at a rate of 3 meals per day, and permanently leaving a bowl of croquettes "puppy", and water.
MORNING:       3 soup spoons with soft white cheese (40% of fat content), and 1 teaspoon of honey
alternately with:   1 yoghourt + 1/2 egg yolk + 1 teaspoon of honey (never of raw egg white)
or with:               1 whole milk pulp with instant baby  flour + 1 teaspoon of  honey
MIDDAY:          raw minced  meat (ox mainly) or chicken or boneless fish cooked  + green vegetables (leeks, French beans, zucchinis) + carrots (few carrots for the blue chows) + rice or pastes or cereals (corn, oats, cornflakes) + 1 piece of butter (never  cooked grease) or 1 teaspoon with corn oil. (There are  prepared mixtures of cereals and dehydrated vegetables).
EVENING:        As midday
In  the day, a contribution of cheese (or cooked pastes), Gruyere or vache-qui-rit, at a rate of approximately 100g, and some biscuits, and a large calf bone to clean and strengthen the teeth.
Gradually you will remove the meal of the morning (however continue to give cheese), then the evening meal (or midday according to his preference), to arrive only at 1 meal per day, at the age of 1 year. Maintain however a bowl of croquettes permanently.
 
 
COMPLEMENTS VITAMINS
CALCIUM: The calcium/phosphorus ratio being very significant, and the meat being very rich in phosphorus, it is appropriate to make a calcium contribution at a rate of:
 - 1g/kg  weight/day of bicalcic phosphate  (pharmacy)
- or 1 tablet twice a day of Ostéocynésine (pharmacy or veterinary surgeon)
VITAMINS A, D, E and trace elements, by respecting the indications scrupulously::
- 8 drops of VITAPAULIA (veterinary)
- or EFFICANIS, SOFTCANIS, STRESS, TONICANIN
 
IT IS USELESS EVEN DANGEROUS TO INCREASE THE RATIONS ABOVE.
 
From 9 months, all this could be replaced by natural powder of bone and brewers' yeast, in annual cures of 1 month, 3 times per annum.
 
For the followers of the industrial food, there is a great choice of croquettes and suppliers: Pedigree, Eukanuba, Royal canin…
EXAMPLES OF DOMESTIC RATIONS
Adult

But in any thing, only the reason precedes. All the dogs do not have exactly the same needs. Your chow chow will indicate himself to you his limit of satiety: by finishing or not his ration.
 
5) GROOMING
To operate under the ideal conditions, pose on a table a carpet of bathroom, whith a non-skin  face.
Accustom the puppy to be be upright. Let use a comb with  moderately spaced teeth. Sprinkle with talc to facilitate the grooming; you can  use talc until the appearance of the adult hair. The hair being disentangled everywhere, brush the wrong way,  and use a flat brush with metal flexible teeth. The chow chow living in urban environment need, more than the others,  to be bathed. You can use, either a pest-destroying shampoo, or a special dog-shampoo (pharmacy or specialized shop).
Comb before  the bath, and dry very carefully. Check that the hair surrounding the ears is well disentangled. As soon as the hair is dry, brush the wrong way.

 
Benefit from the daily grooming of the baby chow chow to learn  to him to let himself handle, open the mouth, touch the testicles for a male, as many acts which will have a considerable importance for socialization.
 
6) CONFIRMATION
Your chow chow being one year old, will be able to undergo this exam. If he is declared CONFIRMED, he will then be registered definitively in the LOF (Livre des Origines Françaises).
Localization of the exam:
- in the residence of the judges,  whose list appears in the review of the CCCF (this exam is free).
- in all the dog shows organized by the Regional Canine Associations, under the aegis of the SCC. (Central Canine Association)
